How to Wash your Hair: 10 Steps

"How can I properly wash my hair? Why do my hair feel heavy and greasy even after shampooing, or the next day?"

If you want to start caring about your hair, first thing you might want to learn is how to wash them in the correct way. Here's a list of all the things you should and should't do on wash days!

1.

Don't wash your hair everyday to let your hair’s natural oils do their thing and keep your hair strong and healthy.

2.

Consider investing in a water filter. Shower filters eliminate chlorine, chemicals and minerals from the water, that produce a film on the hair, making it difficult for moisture to penetrate.

Using a clarifying shampoo is a valid alternative, though, (and less expensive) to remove the mineral build up on hair caused by hard water.

3.

Use lukewarm water to rinse your hair, to open the cuticles so that the shampoo can penetrate and clean your hair deeply. Make sure your hair is fully wet before applying the shampoo.

4.

Mix the shampoo with a little water in the palm of your hand and apply it only onto your scalp.

5.

Consider investing in an inexpensive scalp cleaning brush or massage your scalp and roots using your fingers, with gentle pressure.

This little circular brush helps the shampoo penetrate more deeply, remove product buildup and exfoliate dead skin on the scalp.

HOW TO USE IT: Wet your hair and apply shampoo throughout your scalp. Then gently massage with the silicone brush, in small, circular motions for 3-5 minutes.

6.

Rinse your hair carefully (3-5 minutes), making sure no soap remains, to avoid scalp buildup.

7.

Always apply conditioner after shampoo, on the lengths and ends of slightly towel-dried hair. While you wait for the product to work its magic, you can use a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush to easily detangle your hair. (if you're interested in getting one, you can find it here!)

8.

Leave the conditioner in for 5-7 minutes (no more) and then rinse your hair carefully, making sure to remove all the product.

9.

End the shower with cold water to seal your hair's cuticles, and towel dry your hair using a microfiber towel or a cotton T-shirt.

10.

If you want to apply a hair mask, always apply it on wet, clean hair (after a clarifying shampoo) to make sure oils and other products used on your hair don't make it difficult for the mask to penetrate into the cuticles.

Generally, avoid applying hair masks onto your scalp, unless specifically indicated.

If you apply a DIY hair mask, made with natural ingredients, you might want to make sure you shampoo your hair again after that, to remove all the residues. If you shampoo again, then remember to apply conditioner too, to smooth out the cuticles, reduce the frizz and protect your hair from damage!
